The dIRECTOR

Kelly Johnston originally hails from North Carolina, where he did his undergraduate studies at UNC at Chapel Hill in Theatre. He followed up a few years later by getting his Master’s Degree in Directing at the California Institute of the Arts. He has worked in various regional theatres, in addition to freelancing here in New York City at several different venues including Columbia University, NYU, and the NYC Fringe twice. He co-founded and ran two critically acclaimed theatre companies: Sirius Theatre in Los Angeles (1995-1998) and, most recently, the Arizona Shakespeare Festival in Prescott, Arizona (1998-2009).

At Sirius, Kelly was co-Artistic Director and the architect of the annual Summer of Shakespeare tour. This multi-state partnership with different cities allowed audiences to come see Shakespeare in various outdoor venues free of charge.

At AzSF, Kelly was the Artistic Director for its first twelve seasons, during which time he developed the Educational Outreach program, co-created the long-form experimental improv group, The World’s Greatest Shakespeare Company and developed the training/apprentice program. Currently, he freelance directs in New York City and is the co-creator of the web series, Department of Death.

He is a proud Member of the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers, a founder of Directors Discuss, a co-Artistic Director of Rogue and Peasant Slave Theatre Company, a company member of Magis Theatre Company, an Associate Artist of the Arizona Shakespeare Festival, and a Resident Director for Variations Theatre Group.
